RSVP has been running hosting programmes for international students from NUS and Temasek Polytechnic and has recently taken part in the hosting programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). For greater efficiency, we have combined these different hosting programmes into one.

At the Polytechnic, the students are here to do diploma courses that last three years. The polytechnic programme involves hosts befriending the student guests. The purpose is to help these students adapt to living in Singapore and to gain confidence, especially in English. The hosts do this by inviting their guests home for festivals and other celebrations. They are also free to invite the students to other ‘fun' events such as concerts.

The NUS programme is similar. The big difference between the Polytechnic and the NUS is that the NUS has many exchange students besides the usual undergraduate and graduate international students. The hosting arrangement lasts for a short while, about six months for exchange students (generally longer for undergraduates).

The MFA programme usually involves short- term government-to-government guests. These visitors usually stay about two weeks. During the two weeks or so, our government makes sure that the guest is invited once to a Singaporean home. The purpose is to allow the guest to socialize with the ‘ordinary' Singaporean family. The hope is that the guest will go home with pleasant memories of Singapore.
