Volunteering in RSVP
How did you get into volunteering with RSVP?
In early 2010, I walked out of a brand new job disgusted with the legacy baggage I inherited. I thought, “might as well call it a day”. But I missed the structured schedule of a working life. So I looked for volunteer work that I could do at a frequent and regular level. I have heard of RSVP Singapore, so I decided to look up the website. I found programmes that could allow me to utilize and hone my skills. So here, I am at RSVP.
What do you volunteer in currently at RSVP and what are your responsibilities ?
I started with the Mentoring Programme in July 2010. Then, in late August, Dr Chin approached me to help Mr T T Yeo in the Mentally Disadvantaged Outreach Programme (MDOP). MDOP allows me to put my knowledge about rehabilitation into action. Since then, it has been an enriching experience, training and motivating other volunteers to engage the mental patients at the Institute of Mental Health’s day centres. Then, I tried my hand at guiding children in a learning journey. My contact with key persons like Mr Ngiam Tong Yuen and Ms Brenda Yeow landed up in my being appointed to serve in the committees of Learning Journey and Senior Guiding, and the Mentoring Programme. Life is now so much busier than when I was working full time - but much, much, more fulfilling.
How often do you volunteer each week and for how many hours?
My commitment does not allow me to allot fixed time slots for each programme, although I mentor on Wednesday afternoons. Every programme has its demand for attention and much room for creative thinking and action.
What satisfaction have you gained from the experience?
I love to see my ideas put to action. I love meeting people oozing with enthusiasm for the work they do. I love meeting like-minded people who share the common purpose of doing good for others without thought of reward. The camaraderie makes life so much more beautiful.
What would you say to other seniors about volunteering?
Come and join us! You will be more connected and happier with this external focus in your life.
